Universal Design & Digital Inclusion Standard

Accessibility Statement

An overview of how oTimers is engineered to support students, educators, and individuals with visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive diverse needs, targeting conformance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA.

Conformance Standard

WCAG 2.1 Level AA & Section 508 Target

We believe classroom instruments and timing utilities should be universally accessible to every learner without technical barriers or sensory overload:

✓
High-Contrast Dual Modes

OLED Dark and Paper Light modes with contrast ratios meeting or exceeding WCAG AA/AAA.

✓
Complete Keyboard Operation

All primary timer controls are operable via single-key shortcuts and standard Tab navigation.

✓
Sensory-Friendly Procedural Sound

Harmonic musical chimes rather than harsh sirens; instant 1-click global mute.

✓
Native Reduced Motion

Automatically respects vestibular preferences with zero flashing or seizure triggers.

How We Engineer for Accessibility

Specific architectural and visual design decisions built directly into every timer instrument.

Visual & Display Accessibility

High contrast, back-of-the-room legibility, and dual OLED dark / paper light modes.

  • Dual themes: OLED Dark mode for light sensitivity and Paper Light mode for high-ambient lighting, both meeting WCAG 2.1 Level AA/AAA contrast ratios.
  • Tabular numbers (tabular-nums) that prevent visual jitter or flickering digits during rapid millisecond or second countdowns.
  • Multi-modal indicators: timer states (Work, Rest, Finished) are communicated with text labels, shapes, and progress bars—never color alone.
  • Scalable typography that gracefully respects browser zoom up to 200% without breaking layouts or truncating readouts.

Auditory & Sensory-Processing Friendly

Harmonic procedural chimes, instant 1-key mute, and zero startling audio blasts.

  • Synthesized Web Audio: completion alerts use soft musical sine/triangle harmonic chimes instead of harsh, distorted sirens or buzzers.
  • Sensory safe for neurodivergent students, including individuals with autism, ADHD, or auditory processing sensitivities.
  • Instant global mute: press "M" or tap the speaker icon at any time to silence all sound immediately.
  • Zero audio autoplay: no background music, no video ad audio, and no unsolicited sound playback.

Motor & Keyboard Navigation

Full single-key keyboard operation, visible focus indicators, and touch-friendly targets.

  • Single-key global shortcuts: Spacebar to Start/Pause, "M" to Mute, "F" for Fullscreen, and Escape to dismiss modals.
  • Logical tab order across all interactive buttons, inputs, and flyout navigation menus.
  • High-contrast focus rings clearly indicate the active element for keyboard and switch-access users.
  • Generous touch targets (exceeding 44x44px) engineered for classroom Smartboards, touch displays, and tablets.

Vestibular & Motion Safety

Native reduced motion support and zero rapid flashing or seizure hazards.

  • Honors system-level prefers-reduced-motion preferences to disable pulse animations, orb scaling, and radial sweep motion.
  • Zero strobe or flashing effects: 100% compliant with WCAG 2.3.1 Three Flashes or Below Threshold standards.
  • Calm, steady transitions that avoid disorienting page shifts or parallax jumps.

Keyboard & Assistive Switch Shortcuts

Educators and students using keyboard-only navigation or adaptive switches can control timers using simple single-key triggers.

Key / Shortcut Action
Space Start, pause, or resume the active timer
M Toggle global audio mute on or off
F Toggle distraction-free fullscreen presentation mode
Esc Exit fullscreen mode or close popover panels
Tab Navigate forward through interactive controls
Shift + Tab Navigate backward through interactive controls

Assistive Technology Integration

oTimers uses standard semantic HTML5 landmark tags (<header>, <nav>, <main>, <footer>) to allow rapid screen reader navigation via heading structures and landmark jumps.

During active countdowns, millisecond ticks are intentionally silenced from screen reader buffers to avoid overwhelming text-to-speech output with constant continuous updates. When a timer reaches completion or switches phases (such as moving from a Pomodoro work block to a break), accessible ARIA alerts announce the milestone.

All decorative graphical SVG elements are marked with aria-hidden="true", while informative icons and controls carry explicit accessible labels.
